HQ How-To: Spring Maintenance

Spring is here in South Carolina and it is time to do some important home maintenance tasks to keep things running smoothly as the seasons shift. The Home Care and Service page of the Hunter Quinn Homes website has links to each video in the HQ How-To series and Home Maintenance Tips too. We will highlight a few timely ones below.

Start with fresh filters

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can be between two to five percent more polluted than what we breathe outdoors. This makes clean air filters vital to meet allergens and other pollutants before they circulate through your home. To change your air filter, you will need to find the return and unhinge the grill. Make sure the arrow on the side of the new filter is facing up and the grill is firmly closed. This is a good time to gently dust the return vent too. For maximum efficiency, air filters should be changed every 30 days.

Examine the exterior

When you are out grilling or tending to the garden this spring, take a lap around the outside of your home to check for any flaws on the exterior. First, look for cracks in the brick, stone, and stucco. Then, look for warped siding, gaps in wood trim, and peeling or blistering of the paint. Finding and attending to these issues early is key in preventing further damage.

We also suggest spending some time on a ladder looking for broken or missing shingles on the roof that could lead to leaking. Cleaning your gutters and checking downspouts will help avoid water damage from spring rain showers.

Check the caulk

Another important part of your maintenance routine is to check the caulk around your windows and trim. If you find any gaps, grab a tube of paintable latex caulk and place a bead of it along the edge. You can clean up the excess with a swipe of your finger and then smooth it over with a damp towel. Doing this every year will help maintain a tight seal around your home that improves efficiency.

Clean your weatherstripping

Removing and cleaning the weatherstripping around your doors once a year can help maintain that envelope around your home as well. Weatherstripping can wear down over time which leaves you paying to send your air conditioning outside through the cracks. We suggest brushing with a household cleaner and then popping the weatherstripping back into place.
