Tips for Decorating Your Townhome for the Holidays

Did you move to a new townhome this year? Wondering how to make it festive right now? Hunter Quinn Homes has built many townhomes and helped homeowners make the most of their new space. Here are some tips for decorating your townhome for the holiday.

Start with a clean canvas.

Before you haul out the boxes of holiday decorations, clean and de-clutter the spaces you want to redo for the season. Layering stuff over more stuff will detract from the festive appearance of the area. Remove accents that are unnecessary to display or use for the time being. If you like, set them aside to store in the holiday boxes you’re unpacking with your decorations. Then, when you’re ready to replace everything after the season, it’s accessible.

Make a decorating plan.

When you decorate a room, you don’t just start placing things here and there. You start with a vision. Do the same for your holiday decorating. Decide on the color palette and theme. Think about the story you want your holiday home to tell. Is it bright and playful, soft and romantic, rich with sentiment, classically elegant, or something else?

Once you’ve settled on the idea, look through your current inventory of decorations. Decide what fits with your plan and what doesn’t. Don’t feel you have to use everything in your stash. “The way we’ve always done it” is clinging to the past. You’re in a new townhome. Start a new tradition.

Define the open concept.

Next, look at the spaces you’re going to decorate. An open floor plan can be both exciting and challenging. When you first designed this space, you probably made sure that the kitchen, living room, and dining area flowed nicely from space to space. Your holiday decor should follow the same clear path. However, you can still create smaller spaces within your larger one. If you want decorative “vignettes” within the open concept, have at it! Your reading nook can transform into a visit with Santa, with holiday books and maybe a jar of candy canes. As long as you continue your color scheme and don’t stray too far off your overall theme, your home will transform into a stunning showcase of spirit.

Make it a whole-home project.

As you’re adding festive touches, don’t forget to spread it all through your townhome. From the bedrooms to the bathrooms and laundry room, incorporate decor that will keep you in the mood, from the moment you wake up to when you turn off the lights at the end of the night. It doesn’t have to be heavy-handed (unless you want to!) but comforting reminders. Add a basket of pine cones with a holiday ribbon in the bathroom, hang holiday cards strung on a line in the laundry room, and maybe place a small Christmas tree in every bedroom for each occupant to decorate their own way.

I've dealt mostly w/ Chad Murdock & Rick Melo through my purchase/moving process. Both of them have been extremely helpful, and are a big part of the reason I wound up choosing Hunter Quinn. I had been in the market for over a year, and my realtor finally recommend this neighborhood as he had some friends that had invested. I'm super happy w/ my decision! Thank you!
