Gather samples. Before you sit down in your home builder’s design center, gather photos that show the styles, colors, and details you like. Also, bring photos of furnishings you intend to have in your new home. This information will help the interior designer guide you through the choices that will best complement you and your lifestyle.

Create a color palette first. Start your interior design planning with a color palette. Choose the paint colors and tones that will present the atmosphere you want in your home. It could be neutrals, country cottage, contemporary, vibrant, or somewhere in the middle. Compare the colors from room to room so that they flow and blend as you move through the home. Be sure to look at swatches under different light, as they will be seen in your home. As you talk with your home builder, find out the type of paint that is going to be used. You want a low-VOC paint, to prevent the volatile organic compound emissions.

Balance durability and great looks. Choices like flooring are important because your floors take the most beating. Between foot traffic and pets, certain areas should be protected. Today’s homeowners like the look of wood flooring, but often need something that’s more resistant.
