Charleston, SC: A Great Place To Live
Charleston, South Carolina is known for its world renowned shopping and dining, strong local economy, European charm, nationally recognized historic sites, and premiere beaches. A city that is rich in history and culture, Charleston has been a popular area to visit and to live since its founding more than 300 years ago. It's no wonder that after walking its cobblestone streets, shopping its 19th century storefronts on King Street, boating in its harbor, or touring its distinguished homes, many tourists decide they want to relocate to our gorgeous city.
Few areas on the east coast offer such a range of things to do. Whether you want to take the family to a Charleston Riverdogs minor league baseball game, play a round of golf at one of the twenty-two golf courses in the area, sample wines at Irvin House Vineyard, go fishing or crabbing in the marshes, visit the South Carolina Aquarium, learn to surf at the beach, watch a local theater production at the famous Dock Street Theatre, or grab local produce at the Farmers Market, Charleston offers something for everyone.
North Charleston’s central location makes it ideal for commercial development, medical offices, and transportation thoroughfares. Often referred to as Charleston Metro, it offers large scale shopping and entertainment sprinkled with residential communities. North Charleston is home to the Performing Arts Center, Northwoods Mall and Stadium Cinema, and Tanger Outlets in addition to the many shopping centers located off Rivers Avenue.
This is also where some of Charleston’s largest employers are located such as Boeing, the International Airport, Air Force Base, Trident Tech, Roper Hospital System, Trident Medical Center, and Naval Weapons Station. North Charleston balances a great location with affordability and numerous entertainment options. Whether you want to catch a Stingrays hockey game, go shopping or out to eat, visit the historic H.L. Hunley submarine, or take the dog and family to the thousand-acre Wannamaker County Park, you'll find just about everything you could want.
With a small town feel and great public schools, Summerville is one of the fastest growing suburbs of Charleston. Its quaint downtown section has changed little over the past fifty years, and it offers antique stores, local restaurants like The Mustard Seed, a community theater, and the 12-acre Azalea Park which hosts the annual Flowertown Festival (recently named a Top Twenty Event by the Southeast Tourism Society). Just 5 minutes away from Downtown Summerville, you'll find a range of large scale commercial shopping centers. Perhaps the most popular is Azalea Square which features a Kohl’s, Target, and Ulta - just to name a few options. The Regal Cinemas is also located here along with a Lowes, Walmart, and Cracker Barrel nearby.
Two of the best golf courses in Summerville are at Legend Oaks Plantation and Miler Country Club (both courses are public). The Gahagan Sports Complex hosts leagues and tournaments for kids as well as adults. The new YMCA is also worth checking out, and it offers free child care while you exercise. Although Summerville offers plenty of entertainment options, know that Downtown Charleston is less than a 40 minute drive.
Less than 30 minutes from Historic Charleston, the suburb of Goose Creek is conveniently located off Interstate 26. The Recreation Commission does a great job of keeping the community active with its selection of complexes as well as sports leagues and classes for all ages.
The new Goose Creek Community Center features a walking track, fitness center, climbing wall, sports fields, and 2 gymnasiums. The Felkel Field Sports Complex also hosts many events for the Recreation Commission. The City of Goose Creek’s pool and tennis courts are located at Crowfield Plantation and offer very affordable memberships. You can also join the Crowfield Golf Club, whose course was given 3.5 stars by Golf Digest. Goose Creek is just a few minutes’ commute from Charleston Southern University and Trident Technical College.
If you want to live near Charleston and are looking for the most affordable homes, taxes, and insurance, Moncks Corner is a great option to consider. Located about 45 minutes inland from Downtown Charleston, Moncks Corner offers some of the best outdoor activities you’ll find in the area. Lake Moultrie is perhaps the most popular among locals and is just over a 20 minute drive. Lake Moultrie covers more than 60,000 acres, making it the third largest lake in South Carolina.
Old Santee Canal Park is made up of 195 acres surrounding the Santee Canal, which was the first canal constructed in the United States. Built in 1793, the canal today offers wonderful opportunities for canoeing, hiking, and bird watching. Here you’ll also find Stony Landing Plantation and the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center. Moncks Corner is also home to historic Cypress Gardens, which features 3.5 miles of walking trails, a reptile center, butterfly house, and swamp boat rides. The bald cypress and tupelo trees are brimming with wildlife, and in the spring you’ll see an array of lilies, azaleas, and camellias. Moncks Corner also has a small downtown area, plus you’ll find plenty of shopping and restaurants nearby.
